    Nie Er was a famous Chinese composer. He was born on February 14, 1912 in Yunnan Province and died on July 17, 1935. He wrote most of the pieces in the two years before he died. The March of the Volunteers(《义勇军进行曲》) is one of the most famous pieces. Most of them describe the life of the working class(工人阶级).

    The name, Nie Er, came from an interesting story.

    Nie Er loved music very much. He learned to play many instruments by himself, such as the Sanxian and the Erhu. And he was good at imitating(模仿) others' voices. People called him "cars"(Er means ears in Chinese.) because he could imitate what he heard. He liked the name very much and changed his former(先前的) name Nie Shouxin into Nie Er. And he could move his ears back and forth(来回地).
