Do you like handicraft
(手工艺)? For Yang Changqin, a 31-year-old
intangible. cultural heritage inheritor (非物质文化遗产继承人)of
Chishui bamboo-weaving (竹编), the handicraft has not
only changed her life, but also helped many people in Chishui to get rid of poverty
(摆脱贫穷).
Yang was born in a poor
family in Guizhou in 1990. Her father died when she was young. After graduating
from middle school, she started to work and support her family. During the time,
she did many different jobs, including being a saleswoman, a waitress and a
cook. After collecting some money , she returned back to school again.
In 2007, when Yang was
about to complete her course, as one of the school's top students, she got a
chance to join nine other classmates on a six- month trip to learn the
bamboo-weaving craft in Chishui."At first I often cut my fingers, making
it too hurt to hold chopsticks at mealtime. But I also started to be interested
in the beautiful handicraft," Yang says. Back home, when she finished her
course, instead of finding a job as a teacher .Yang made the decision to return
to Chishui to continue learning the craft. "I often felt pity for the loss
of traditional crafts and the culture behind them, so I wanted to inherit this
craft and call on more young people to learn it."
In 2012, Yang started
a business to sell bamboo-woven products like tea sets and bags both online and
offline. "If you sell the bamboo, you can get 6 yuan at most, but if you
sell a bamboo- woven product, you can get several hundred yuan or even a
thousand," says Yang.
Her products are sold
all over China, and even abroad. In 2019, her company s sales even reached 6
million yuan. "My company is named Qianshou, which means' joining hands'.
I want to take more people's hands and guide them to get into the bamboo-
weaving industry," says Yang. Growing up in a single-parent family, Yang understands
the difficulty of left- behind children and the elderly. She has taught many
local women to weave bamboo. They now produce bamboo products for Yang from
home, where they are able to take care of the family instead of moving to far
areas to find work. So far, she has helped more than 100 local women in this
way.
