One day when I was still a primary school pupil, I got back home after school and find Daddy sitting in a chair reading. “Daddy, there is going to have a parents' meeting this evening, you're requiring to attend it,” I said to him with a low voice. Hearing this, Daddy started to comb his hair. When anything was almost ready, I begged him to take me with him. So he did it. When we got to the school gate, Daddy was surprised to find that was strangely quiet in the school. Look at his puzzled face, I told him that it was just a small meeting and that we two were only people invited. Daddy seemed to understand everything and he had to go ahead.

Once a boy came to ask a fisherman how to become cleverer, because his mother always called him “foolish boy”.

“That's easy,” answered the fisherman. “I know one way to make you become cleverer.”

        “Really?”

“Of course. It is said a fish head is good for brain. If you eat one, you'll become cleverer indeed. Pay only three pounds for one fish head.” The boy paid him three pounds and the fisherman cut off a fish head and handed it to him.

A raw fish head is not good—not even for a hungry boy to eat but the boy ate it up in  two gulps.

“Do you feel anything?” asked the fisherman.

“Not in my head,” said the boy.

The boy lay on the ground and thought. “One whole fish costs only two pounds. I have paid him three pounds for the fish head. Why couldn't I have the whole fish for soup, a head for brain and one pound left over?” He jumped up and shouted at the fisherman. “You thief! You are fooling me!” The fisherman laughed, saying, “The fish head works now, you see.”

The boy ate up the raw fish head only in two gulps, because he __________.

The boy came to the fisherman in order to __________.

The boy paid three pounds. He should have had __________.

Mahatma Gandhi once said, “The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”

There is no doubt that China is a country with high moral values. It has never attacked another country, has one of the lowest rates of violent crimes and is deeply concerned with the social and economic welfare of its people.

But when it comes to animal rights, China may well fail Gandhi test. There are no laws against the killing of dogs and the sale of dog meat in China. In fact the serving of dog meat in Chinese restaurants has increased in recent years.

People who eat dog meat argue that dogs have been eaten in China for thousand of years and dog meat has “health benefits”.

There is, however, a strong argument against waiting dogs .Recently, some Chinese animal rights activists stopped a truck carrying about 500 dogs and saved the poor animals from being sold and served as food in restaurants. These people that dogs are not meant to be eaten but loved.

    根据短文内容,判断以下句子的正误。

China has only one law to prevent killing and eating dogs

China has a long history of eating dogs.

More dog meat is served in Chinese restaurants in recent years.

No one believes that eating dogs is beneficial health.

One hot night last August, I tried everything I could think of — toys, songs etc. to make him fall into sleep, but he just couldn't do it. Since I believed that a long night was waiting for me ahead, I had no choice but to bring a TV into his room to kill off the hours until dawn. I was surprised that the moment I turned on the TV the baby became quiet right away and fixed his little eyes brightly on the screen. Not willing to waste an opportunity for sleep, I then tiptoed(蹑手蹑脚地行进) out of the room, leaving him to watch the boring TV programs. I heard no more of the baby's crying that night and the next morning when I went into his room, I found him still watching TV by himself. I found there was a metaphor(暗喻) in my baby's behavior(行为) for the new generation. When I gave my boy some books to go over, he only spit upon them; when I read to him, he did not feel comfortable. And so it is in the schools with my students. I find that our students don't read and they look down upon reading and make light of those of us who teach it. All they want to do is watch TV. After this experience with the baby, however, I have drawn a conclusion: “Let them watch it!” If television is that much more attractive to children than books, why should we fight against it? Let them watch what they want!

Why did the father bring a TV set into his son's room?

The baby seemed to be ______ at the sight of the TV set.

This experience with his baby helped the father ______.

I was blind, but I was ashamed of it if it was known. I refused to use a white stick and hated asking for help. After all, I was a teenage girl, and I couldn't bear people to look at me and think I was not like them. I must have been a terrible danger on the roads. Coming across me wandering through the traffic, motorists probably would have to stop rapidly on their brakes. Apart from that, there were all sorts of disasters that used to occur on the way to and from work.

One evening, I got off the bus about halfway home where I had to change buses, and as usual I ran into something. “I'm awfully sorry,” I said and stepped forward only to run into it again. When it happened a third time, I realized I had been apologizing to a lamppost. This was just one of the stupid things that constantly happened to me. So I carried on and found the bus stop, which was a request stop, where the bus wouldn't stop unless passengers wanted to get on or off. No one else was there and I had to guess if the bus had arrived.

Generally in this situation, because I hated showing I was blind by asking for help, I tried to guess at the sound. Sometimes I would stop a big lorry and stand there feeling stupid as it drew away. In the end, I usually managed to swallow my pride and ask someone at the stop for help.

But at this particular evening no one joined me at the stop; it seemed that everyone had suddenly decided not to travel by bus. Of course I heard plenty of buses pass, or I thought I did. But because I had given up stopping them for fear of making a fool of myself, I let them all go by. I stood there alone for half an hour without stopping one. Then I gave up. I decided to walk on to the next stop.

The girl refused to ask for help because she thought_________.

After the girl got off the bus that evening, she_________.

What was the problem with guessing at the sound to stop a bus?

Finally the girl decided to walk to the next stop, hoping__________.

Jane was running late. Jane, 25, had a lot to do at work, plus visitors on the way: her parents were coming in for Thanksgiving from her hometown. But as she hurried down the subway stairs, she started to feel uncomfortably warm. By the time she got to the platform, Jane felt weak and tired---maybe it hadn't been a good idea to give blood the night before, she thought. She rested herself against a post close to the tracks.

Several yards away, Tom, 43, and his girlfriend, Jennifer, found a spot close to where the front of the train would stop. They were deep in discussion about a house they were thinking of buying.

But when he heard the scream, followed by someone yelling, "Oh, my God, she fell in!" Tom didn't hesitate. He jumped down to the tracks and ran some 40 feet toward the body lying on the rails. "No! Not you!" his girlfriend screamed after him.

She was right to be alarmed. By the time Tom reached Jane, he could feel the tracks shaking and see the light coming. The train was about 20 seconds from the station.

It was hard to lift her. She was just out. But he managed to raise her the four feet to the platform so that bystanders could hold her by the grins and drag her away from the edge. That was where Jane briefly regained consciousness, felt herself being pulled along the ground, and saw someone else holding her purse.

Jane thought she'd been robbed. A woman held her hand and a man gave his shirt to help stop the blood pouring from her head. And she tried to talk but she couldn't, and that was when she realized how much pain she was in.

Police and fire officials soon arrived, and Tom told the story to an officer. Jennifer said her boyfriend was calm on their 40-minute train ride downtown-just as he had been seconds after the rescue, which made her think about her reaction at the time. "I saw the train coming and I was thinking he was going to die," she explained.

Why did Jennifer try to stop her boyfriend?

    How did Tom save Jane?

When did Jane become conscious again?

The passage is intended to _____.
